Lesson 1

This week was the first week of B250 at BYUI. So far I’m liking the class but I am realizing that business classes are definitely a different learning environment compared to computer classes. Since I know nothing about business it was nice to be able to focus on a case study of a group of people and their issues regarding creating their first online business.

This week we were supposed to make a recommendation between a snowboarding business and a chess business based on search data from Google Adwords. This was my first time using Adwords and it was surprisingly easy to use. You are able to find out how many are searching for a particular phrase (or keyword), where those people are located, and how many of those people will convert (spend money on your site).

Two of the categories we used to compare each of the business ideas were demand and competition.

Demand:

the number of people searching for your product

Competition:

the number of other businesses using that particular keyword for advertising

I definitely think that the Google Adwords site will be useful as this course progresses and is a relatively easy and inexpensive way to drive users to your site. It’s interesting to learn different SEO strategies.
